Widikum town is estimated to have begun by 1875 as the farmland of the people of Widikum ancestry. As many local wars occurred in the 1800s, the natives of Widikum lived on villages located on hill tops for strategic reasons. As wars subsided, they descended from their villages to work on their farmlands around the River MomoThis was the modest beginning of Widikum. In 1920, Mathias Mba introduced the Catholic Mission religion, which became a rallying force for the natives, but the Widikum Market was the most important single attraction that could be attributed for the growth of Widikum as a settlement area. The first non-natives who came to live in Widikum were the Bamilekes who came to grow cocoa. The Ibibios and Ibos came for the purpose of buying and selling palm kernels. Widikum is one of the oldest religious, educational and commercial centers of what used to be Southern Cameroons and was ruled by Great Britain under the United Nations trusteeship. In a referendum in 1961, Southern Cameroons voted to join the Republic of Cameroon (formerly ruled by France under the same terms as Southern Cameroons but the Republic had its independence in 1960). Together, Southern Cameroons and the Republic of Cameroon became the Federal Republic of Cameroon. With this change, the fortunes of Widikum changed, but-for the worse. Business between Nigeria and Southern Cameroons was the mainstay of the people of Widikum. With Nigeria as a different nation, the business link between Nigeria and Cameroon was cut and Widikum almost became a ghost town until 1993 when the Widikum Rural Council was created. Since then, things have begun to change. People are rediscovering Widikum, as both the motherland of one of the largest ethnic groups in the North West Province, as an agricultural haven and for its natural and beautiful sceneries. More

Each of us has a vision of what Widikum Town should look like in the future. Although our visions may be different, they share similar qualities. We all want to create a beautiful and safe community with a vibrant economy for our families and future generations.what our community should look like, we look at what already exists and ask ourselves whether we like it or can it be improved? Should the vacant land next to the Momo River be preserved as a park? Where should we put our market? What land should be designated for future residential and commercial uses? How can we improve economic activities to provide employment for our residents? How can we meet the social needs of our youth? How can we keep our community pollution free and retain our pristine environment? When we envision Click here for the Comprehensive development plan for Widikum town
